Vision Statement

Jesus Christ has gathered laity, deacons, priests, and bishop of congregations and diocesan ministries in central and southern Indiana to be the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis.

We celebrate the great gift of our Anglican heritage and will deepen our understanding of its tradition and heritage, inviting others to join us.

We welcome all persons into our common life and will proclaim the gospel to those in our communities who do not yet know our Lord.

We will nurture relationships in Christ, remaining in conversation with one another despite honest disagreement, always seeking God's will.

We are thankful for our differences and acknowledge that they enrich and energize our ministries.

We promise compassion, acceptance, and assistance to those in need.

We acknowledge and celebrate the wealth of talent and treasure which has been given and will grow in confidence that working together, we will always have enough to engage in God's mission.

Chasing the Social Networkers PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 14 September 2009 11:43

Can social networking help grow your church?  The answer is maybe.  Is it worth the time and energy that you could better devote to something else?  Well... that's something we also all have to answer for ourselves.

There are some parishes in this diocese that are putting a significant amount of effort into Facebook fan pages right now.  Two, in particular, that are doing a great job of it include St. Paul's, Richmond, and St. Paul's, Jeffersonville.  They work very hard at being on Facebook regularly, promoting their events/worship opportunities, and chatting frequently.

Here in the diocese, while I'm really getting into Twitter (a great way to fast-blast brief notices of events with links) I'm still on the fence about a major Facebook emphasis (and, I say major emphasis because there's nothing worse than Facebook being done halfway---it needs lots of nurturing and not just "build it and they will come!").  The truth is, I have a great informal network on Facebook of friends from all around the diocese---maybe 100 or so.  And, it is SO convenient to just click on a pic and contact someone without having to hunt up an e-mail address and do that.  The news feeds are a great way to keep up with our mutual joys and concerns.  But, with a lot of young people already migrating on to the next social networking fad (whatever it may eventually be) to leave Facebook to the older generation, there's the basic question of how much we all need to keep chasing the social networkers.  Remember My Space?  Hardly ever hear about it anymore, do you?  Hmmm....

Well---I don't have the questions.  But I sure have lots of questions.  So, how about it?  Is social networking where we should all be headed as a diocese and individual parishes.  And, what type of social networking?

Please post your thoughts... inquiring minds want to know!

Who Locked the Gates? PDF Print E-mail

Under the category of "sure wish I would have said that" comes an Alban Institute book by church planters Gary and Kim Shockley called Imagining Church: Seeing Hope in a World of Change.

Gary has a sign on his office door which says, "The church is the only organization that exists for its nonmembers."  He asks some good questions related to what types of barriers we erect in our parishes that exclude (albeit unconsciously) the "unaffiliated."  He said, "It has got to be about as uncomfortable for many of them to come and feel connected to what we are doing as it would be for us churched folk to show up at a Hindu shrine and be expected to jump right into the ritual."

What About the “De-Churched?” PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 12 January 2009 01:11

When I'm working with parishes around our diocese, we tend to talk a lot about the unchurched. And, for good reason. Statistically, two-thirds of the residents of Indiana are without a church home. Yet, as we talk about the unchurched, there is another sub-group category of folks Ive been thinking a lot about recently---the de-churched.

Who are the de-churched? The term refers to those who have been in other churches but were broken for some reason by that experience. Hmm& I sure know a lot of people like that. How about you?

What if Starbucks Used Church Marketing? PDF Print E-mail

Friends, this one is a hoot!  Watch it and weigh in with your observations.  Though you'll see some of the "megachurch" stuff in there, I know you'll likely recognize a bit of your own parish, too.  Let's chat about it!

What is Evangelism? PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 28 March 2008 19:10

Wow!  This is the fun of being a bloggergetting to chat about your own personal passion when it comes to things like evangelism.  So, what is "Episcopal evangelism"?  I'd sure love to hear what some of the rest of you think.  But, for me, personally, it is this....

Other than "love one another" it is probably the clearest imperative we have in the Gospels.  It is the Great Commissionthe "go" "tell" and "do."  And, it is most and first about intentionally mirroring the embodiment of hospitality Christ lived out in his ministry.
